Hyperbolic Crochet – Coral Reef

The “Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef” is a worldwide project that marries mathematics, marine biology, handicraft, community art practice and environmental consciousness-raising. People all over the world – from London and New York to Capetown – are collectively crocheting coral reefs.

Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef brings together the fate of an ecosystem on the brink of permanent destruction, and the feminine craft of crochet. A woolly testimony that celebrates the hyperbolic geometry of coral, Crochet Coral Reef also draws attention to how global warming and pollutants are threatening this fragile ecosystem.

The picture shown is a finished piece of crochet coral by Nadine who spends Saturdays with us crocheting and knitting (crochet being her first love).

KNIT OR CROCHET A SQUARE ON VALENTINE’S DAY

Knit or Crochet a Square and Show you Care on St. Valentine’s Day – 14th February

A fundraising event in aid of Haiti and Heart Children Ireland will take place on Sunday 14th February 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Pavilions Swords County Dublin.

Get some sponsors and knit or crochet a square 6”x6”. The proceeds will go to Partners in Health an international charity in Haiti headed up by Dublin doctor Louise Ivers link

The squares will be joined to make comfort blankets, which will be given to Heart Children Ireland to be given as a gift to children in the intensive care unit of Crumlin Hospital after their heart surgery. Knitted Headband

We found this pattern for the cutest headband on the internet which can be found on the link below. They are all the rage at the moment. There is a pattern for a chunky version and a thin version whichever takes your fancy. We haven’t tried it ourselves yet but when we do we will post a picture. Link

Knitting Classes

Beginners Knitting and Aran Knitting

Our Knitting classes are starting up again

on Saturday 30th January

BEGINNER’S CLASS from 10am to 11:30 pm

ARAN CLASS from 12:00 to 1:30

For the Aran class you can choose to knit a tea cosy or a cushion cover. The class is for anyone with a fairly good knowledge of knitting and will introduce you to knitting aran stitches.

Classes run for 6 weeks
Cost: 70 euro (materials not included)

For Beginner’s class we supply one pair of knitting needles and yarn to start with.

There is 10% off all material purchased while attending the classes.

Dates for new term of classes are as follows:

BEGINNERS CROCHET

Wednesday evening 24th March 6:30 to 8:00

Thursday morning 25th March 11:00 to 12:30

Saturday afternoon 27th March 2:00 to 3:30

ADVANCED CROCHET

Wednesday evening 24th March 6:30 to 8:00

Saturday afternoon 27th March 4:00 to 5:30

Once you enroll for a class and the class has commenced unfortunately we cannot refund any fees.

The cost of Beginners classes includes crochet hook and yarn to start.

Well Done Connie

Well done Connie who joined our beginner’s knitting class in November and finished these two soft toys for her grandsons for Christmas. We had a lot of laughs and great fun when she was creating them. They are very different, but we love them.

Our Beginner’s Knitting Class will be starting again shortly. Check Website over the next week for details.

Congratulations to all the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class students in Gaelscoile Colmcille who have just completed their first term of knitting classes.
We love all the mug warmers, teddy bears and snowmen. Keep it up boys and girls we look forward to seeing what your next creations are.

Christmas Opening Hours

and Christmas Tea Party (Sunday afternoon 20 December)

We will be closed from 5;30 pm on Wednesday 23rd December and will re-open on Tuesday 5 January at 10:00 am. We would like to thank all our customers for their support during the last year and take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

We are holding an afternoon Christmas Tea Party on Sunday 20 December from 1:30 to 5:00. If you would like to drop in and have a cup of tea and a mince pie we would love to see you.

The pattern for the tea cosy can be found in Sublime Book 614 – The Exquisite Organic Merino Wool Book . The pattern is called Tea Bag and is knitted in one colour. To give it a Christmas feel we knitted the bobbles in red and the leaves in green.

DOMINICAN COLLEGE GRIFFITH AVENUE TRANSITION YEAR STUDENTS LEARN TO KNIT

Well done to all the Transition Year Students in Dominican College Griffith Avenue who learned how to knit. They have all just completed their first project these fabulous multi-coloured wrist warmers. Yarn used Sirdar Crofter DK one 50grm ball (Pattern No. 9135) .
